In Memoriam

Starting in the Summer of 2012, the Tribe wished to acknowledge, recognize, honor and celebrate our fellow Iron Arrows whom we have been notified we lost in the past year. Our Tribe and the University of Miami community mourn their passing. We reach out together as a Tribe to support their families and reflect on their amazing legacies. They will be forever missed, forever Miami Hurricanes and forever Iron Arrows. Members are listed in the order of passing, from most recent at the top.

dave mcdonald David "Dave" McDonald (1929-2021) - Longest serving member of Iron Arrow in a continuous leadership position - 71 years, from 1950 to 2021; Founding Member, Iron Arrow Council of Elders (1985-2021); Chief, Iron Arrow Spring 1951; Medicine Man, Iron Arrow Fall 1951; Bowman Foster Ashe In-Memoriam Award (2010); Dr. Thurston "Doc" Adams In-Memoriam Award, 2002. A man who was the very definition of dedication and exceptional service, the living embodiment of the five criteria of Iron Arrow, whose shoes none of us will ever fill, and to whom we will never be able to say thank you enough. William W. Sandler, Jr. (1934-2017) - 43-year career in service to UM (25 years as Dean of Students), unflappable mentor and advisor to Iron Arrow, Advised fraternities and sororities, Developed the Student Discipline System, Instituted a student-run honor code, Oversaw the Campus Chaplain’s Association, and Cofounded the Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Education.
